Larry Stone, 1931-2009

It is with great sadness that Irell & Manella LLP announces the death of long-time partner Larry Stone from pulmonary fibrosis.  Mr. Stone died on Sunday, March 15 surrounded by his family.

Mr. Stone, the eighth attorney elected to the Irell & Manella partnership, was a nationally recognized tax practitioner who served in the Treasury Department in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations.  During his five years at Treasury, he held a number of top positions, including Tax Legislative Counsel and Director of Tax Legislation.  During his government service, he spearheaded the repeal of numerous World War II excise taxes and worked closely with members of Congress on important tax legislation.

A respected scholar, Mr. Stone taught tax law at the University of California Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law for twelve years.  He also taught tax law at Yale, the University of Southern California, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.  He is the co-author of two well-known law school textbooks – Federal Income Taxation and Federal Income Taxation of Corporations

Mr. Stone was one of 18 members of the CCH Tax Advisory Board, a group of the country's top tax lawyers and accountants.  He served as member of the IRS Commissioner's Advisory Group and the President's Nominating Commission for Appointments to the U.S. Tax Court.  In 1995, Mr. Stone received the Dana Latham award from the Taxation Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association.

Born in Malden, Massachusetts on March 25, 1931, Mr. Stone started working when he was nine years old and did not stop until he retired.  While a scholarship student at Harvard, he drove an ice cream truck, cleaned pots in the kitchen, and polished the shoes of Harvard's president.  In law school, he was a research assistant to Professor Stanley Surrey, who became the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Department and promptly appointed Mr. Stone to key positions at Treasury.

Mr. Stone loved music and loved to hike in our national parks.  A genuine intellectual, he read voraciously, studying genetics, astronomy, and physics in recent years.

Mr. Stone is survived by his wife Jennie Stone, children Abraham, Ethan, and Katharine, and three grandchildren.
