C. Jay  Chung

Jay Chung is an associate in the Los Angeles office of Irell & Manella LLP, where he is a member of the firm's litigation workgroup. Mr. Chung earned his J.D. from Loyola Law School, where he was the Technology Editor on the Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review.

After law school, Mr. Chung served as a law clerk for the Honorable Ronald S.W. Lew of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.  Prior to law school, Mr. Chung worked as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and as an engineer at General Dynamics and Raytheon Company.  He earned his Bachelor of Science in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering from Cornell University.

Representative Matters

  • TiVo Inc. v. EchoStar (E.D. Texas)
    Represented TiVo in a patent infringement suit and contempt proceeding relating to digital video recorder technology.  The jury verdict, judgment, and subsequent orders (including contempt) total more than $400 million to date.
  • St. Jude Medical, Inc. v. AccessClosure Inc. (W.D. Arkansas)
    Represented St. Jude in a patent infringement suit relating to vascular closure devices that are used to close holes created during medical catheterization procedures.  The jury found willful infringement and awarded St. Jude $27.1 million in damages.
