Daily Journal Names Matt Ashley and Morgan Chu ‘Leading Commercial Litigators’

01.2023

Matt Ashley and Morgan Chu were recognized as 2023 Daily Journal “Leading Commercial Litigators.” The inaugural list honors attorneys who were lead counsel on recent significant California victories, or matters that substantially impacted the state.

The publication noted that Matt secured a sweeping defense victory for Fortress Investment Group and co-defendants, which were accused by Intel and initial co-plaintiff Apple of engaging in an anti-competitive patent aggregation scheme. Matt also obtained a precedent-setting published U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit opinion affirming the dismissal of a securities fraud class action against client Uber Technologies, the Daily Journal said.

Morgan was honored for co-leading Irell & Manella LLP teams that secured a pair of significant trial victories for VLSI Technology in suits against Intel involving microprocessor technology – a $2.3 billion final judgment, which was the largest patent judgment in history, and a $948 million verdict. The Daily Journal also noted that Morgan conducted the Ninth Circuit arguments on behalf of Fortress and co-defendants in the antitrust matter mentioned above, after which the circuit affirmed their defense victory.
